RAFA Shoreham Airshow – 31 August 2014

The Shoreham Airshow raises funds for the RAF Association and 2014’s bumper crowd will have been highly beneficial to the charity. Many will have come to see the Canadian Lancaster which was sadly grounded with engine problems but the show delivered plenty to keep everyone happy. The customary Battle of Britain set-piece gave way to a 70th anniversary D-Day commemoration with an enacted invasion of the airfield featuring two Dakotas (avoiding the ‘flak’) and a variety of fighters.

The following illustrates a selection of the variety on offer at this popular event:

Little Gransden Air & Car Show – 24 August 2014

‘The Lancaster Effect’ ensured a sell-out crowd at Little Gransden, and a record attendance amounted to an amazing¬†donation of nearly ¬£64,000 to Children in Need and a further ¬£12,000 to local childrens charities. Dave Poile (pictured at work during the show) and his hard working team put together another packed and eclectic flying program, but it was the appearance by the pair of Lancasters that will live longest in the memory.

Biggin Hill Festival of Flight and Red Arrows 50th Display Season Anniversary – 14 June 2014

Having passed over Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen’s Birthday Flypast (see below) the Red Arrows went on to land at ‘London’ Biggin Hill Airport in preparation for their part in the Festival of Flight, a welcome return of a public airshow at this historic ex-RAF airfield. Limited to 15,000 advance purchased tickets – all sold – the day saw three sections of display flying interspersed with ground attractions, culminating in an evening display by the Reds. Upon completion of their display the team were joined by Paul Bonhomme in the Old Flying Machine Company’s Spitfire IX MH434, once owned and flown so perfectly by the late, great Ray Hanna. Ray used to close the old Biggin Hill Air Fairs with inimitable displays in the Spitfire and was also a member of the first Red Arrows team of 1965, taking the position as Red 1 the following year.

The following is a photographic overview of the day.
