London Games Festival – Trafalgar Square – 2 April 2016

A large Monopoly board has been set up in Trafalgar Square as part of the London Games Festival. The public can play on the board using a mobile phone ‘app’. As well as some of the familiar game squares, travelling around the board gives the players a history lesson in many of the various key moments in computing and gaming.

‘The Passion of Jesus’ – Trafalgar Square, London – 25 March 2016

On Easter’s Good Friday the cast of Wintershall – plus a number of animals – portrayed the ‘Passion’ and the resurrection of Jesus Christ using Trafalgar Square as a stage to a packed audience of many thousands. The Wintershall Charitable Trust was established to bring the story of the Bible to life through epic dramatic open air plays such as this, with two performances taking place at this location and further ones in Guildford on Saturday. The play includes a spectacular depiction of the crucifixion, which quite rightly carries a ‘parental guidance’ warning. Actor James Burke-Dunsmore delivers a powerful performance in the lead role, taking the audience through the familiar story of ‘miracles’ and persecution before meeting his temporary end on the cross.

Sadly, as with many similar events, it does suffer from overly intrusive press photographers. Many need to regulate themselves better and appreciate that they are having an impact on the public’s view.

International Pillow Fight Day – Trafalgar Square – London – 4 April 2015

A pillow fight in Trafalgar Square is an annual event organised by Focal Local, a group aiming to promote positive social action in the community through encouraging total strangers to interact with each other by participating in such events. Thousands of members of the public brought their own pillows with which to hit each other after the ‘kick-off’ whistle was blown at 13:00. The ‘fighting’ carried on all afternoon with new people continuing to join the fray as others flagged.
