Abingdon Air & Country Show – Dalton Barracks – 14 May 2017

The airshow at the former RAF airfield suffered a number of pre-event cancellations and periods of bad weather – despite being moved a couple of weeks further into the year in an attempt to avoid those incidents from which it had previously suffered.  As always though, Neil Porter and his small team delivered a highly entertaining program of flying and ground activities, with revised regulations necessitating a complete re-design of the public access and viewing areas. One of the Twister team experienced an engine failure resulting in a heavy emergency landing and injuries to the pilot, reported to be relatively minor. The following images hopefully illustrate a little of what was on offer to the visiting public.

Abingdon Air & Country Show – Dalton Barracks – 1 May 2016

The traditional opening airshow of the season at the former RAF airfield suffered a number of pre-event cancellations, but as always delivered a highly entertaining program of flying and ground activities. The unexpected highlights for many were the vintage helicopters, with the Westland Wasp in particular proving to be very agile and a type rarely seen displaying. The following images hopefully illustrate a little of what was on offer to the visiting public.

Abingdon Air & Country Show – 3 May 2015

Having suffered a number of pre-show cancellations, the show was also unfairly hit by the weather with a number of heavy downpours during the day adding to the blustery wind. The organisers however did manage to chop and change to serve up a very enjoyable show – as ever making great contributions to charities such as the featured Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance. The event saw the debut of the RAF’s 75th anniversary Battle of Britain pairing of Typhoon and Spitfire, which appeared just after one of the worst periods of the day’s rain and which could so easily have been added to the cancellations. The images below cover some of the highlights of the show and also illustrate some of the added attractions at the event, plus some ‘arrivals’ on the Saturday, a day which ended with a night shoot:

Abingdon Air & Country Show – 4 May 2014

The season-opening airshow at the old RAF base in Oxfordshire (now Dalton Barracks) is always an incredible achievement by the small volunteer team, and held in aid of the Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust. The 2014 event suffered slightly from a few cancellations, but still managed to deliver a great show. The following is a pictorial record of the weekend, including the practices and arrivals on the Saturday 3 May and that evening’s night-shoot, which itself generated a very a welcome boost to the charity’s total.

Abingdon Air & Country Show – 5 May 2013

Image

Held in aid of the Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust the volunteer-run Abingdon show provided a fun day out for the family and enthusiast alike, and benefited from some better weather than has been the case for many shows over recent years. Here are some highlights:

Image

Will Hilton and the SWIP Twister in which he would make his public display debut later in the day.

Five years ago Will, now 19, was an Air Cadet at the show directing cars. The youngster approached Twister pilot Pete Wells at that show and told him that it was his ambition to become a display pilot. With the help of Pete, Alan Cassidy and his own determination he has turned that ambition into reality.

Rod Dean made his 2013 display debut at Abingdon in Bulldog XX543, having retired from displaying warbirds and classic jets.

ImagePeter Vacher’s Mk1 Hurricane was a star of the warbird content:

ImageThe above is but a small snapshot of the events in the air, with many more on the ground. The small team led by Neil Porter deserve much praise for their extreme efforts in bringing the show together each year. Look out for it in 2014.
